‘Reply to an Atheist’ is mainly a response to the baseless allegations against religions especially Islam in the book “The Curse of God: Why I left Islam’ by Harris Sultan. It points out in a logical manner the fallacies in the book. The first Chapter ‘The Stereotyped Arguments’ points out how stereotyped sentences and ideas have been used in general to malign religion. Chapter 2 ‘Vague Objections’ lists out with examples the unreasonable objections which have been raised against the verses of the Quran. Chapter 3 ‘Reason and Religion’ classifies people as being at different stages of reasoning and emphasizes the importance of reasoning in religion. Chapter 4 ‘The Essence of Islam’ describes in brief some of the essential teachings and principles enumerated in the Quran. In Chapter 5 ‘Science and Religion’ it has been pointed out that science and religion are not contradictory if religion is discovered through reasoning and counters the arguments of the atheists that there is no evidence of God through science. In Chapter 6 ‘The Gifts of Religion’, some important values common to all major religions have been listed. The last Chapter is Epilogue. Here again the importance of reason is emphasized and it has been suggested that if all religions focus on reason, there would be a convergence of beliefs and a better and harmonious relationship among the followers of various religions.
On the basis of recent scientific insights, the author has also challenged the atheistic propositions in the name of science especially those of Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins. It is hoped that this book would make an interesting reading for all people who are in search of truth with reason.
